Well intervention is a term used for any operation such as performing major maintenance or remedial treatments in an oil & gas well during or at the end of its productive life. This alters their state and well geometry sometimes; thereby managing its production. In depleting reservoirs when residual hydrocarbons is bypassed and eventually trapped, initial well placement may not be able to fully drain the reservoir; typically 30% to 40% of the oil is easily recoverable. In such cases, demand for drilling new wells may not be the best solution to achieve additional barrels of oil and counterbalance the natural production decline. But with well surveillance & well intervention services, recovery rate can further be enhanced to aid while satisfying the current and future energy needs.

The need for well intervention typically occurs after five years of production, due to reduced pressure in wells, increased water cut or sand production, scaling in wells, and other factors. Generally, oil wells have a greater need for intervention than gas or injection wells. Operations such as through-tubing workover, using coiled tubing, and snubbing or slick-line equipment are routinely conducted to complete treatments or well service activities to avoid a full workover where the tubing is removed.

Subsea well interventions possess many challenges and require much advanced planning. With an increase in demand for energy, subsea exploration and well construction has experienced a rapid growth. As the market expands in this uncertain and high investment area, it leads the well intervention service market to expand and create opportunities to new entrants with a high growth rate.

Well intervention market in Europe was valued at $2,698.7 million in 2014, and is expected to reach $3,499.7 million by 2019. It is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.3% from 2014 and 2019.
