Phosphate esters are compounds formed by replacing the hydrogen of an acid by a hydrocarbon radical of the ethyl type. They are also called as organophosphates. Phosphate esters belongs to a class of anionic surface active agents. Though there are several other ester based fluids used in lubricants & hydraulic fluids, but phosphate esters are the widely used because of high performance and safety advantage over others.

Phosphate esters are used across various industries. It has great anti-wear properties and is resistant to fire. Hence, it is used in hydraulic systems, lubricants, and fire retardants. The lubricants segment accounts the maximum share because of its thermal stability and high lubrication properties.

Phosphate esters are mostly preferred to be used as an emulsifying agents, wetting agents, anti-statics, corrosion inhibitors, and hydrotropes in cleaning formulations.

The North America phosphate esters market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 3.9% from 2015 to 2020. The U.S.dominated the North America phosphate esters market having accounted for a share of 65.5% in 2014.

Phosphate esters belongs to a class of anionic surface active agents. They are also called as organophosphates. Phosphate esters are widely used in fire resistance and lubricants as it has high flash point and on pyrolysis, it generates phosphoric acid which is a powerful flame retardants. In industries, the fire resistant fluids are expected to operate at high temperature and usage of Tri Aryl phosphate esters offers thermal stability. Hence, phosphate esters are used in industries like lubricants, surfactants, pesticides, fire retardants, hydraulic fluids, plasticizers & paints & coatings amongst others.

The North America phosphate esters market recorded a consumption of 58,580.3 MT in 2014; and is expected to reach 73,607.7 MT by 2020 at a CAGR of 3.9% from 2015 to 2020.

The phosphate esters market has been segmented on the basis of type, application, and geography. In terms of type, the market is segmented into Tri Aryl/Alkyl Aryl phosphate esters, Tri Alkyl phosphate esters, and BIS phosphates. The Tri Aryl/Alkyl Aryl phosphate esters segment dominated the market having accounted for the largest share of 66.8% in 2014. Tri alkyl phosphates, such as tri-butyl phosphate are used because of their higher reactivity. Though there are several other ester based fluids used in lubricants & hydraulic fluids, but phosphate esters are the widely used because of high performance and safety advantage over others.

Lubricants dominates the application segment of this market, and is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 2.3% from 2015 to 2020. However, plasticizers are the fastest-growing application growing at a CAGR of 6.1% annually during the forecast period.

On the basis of geography, the North America phosphate esters market is segmented into countries, namely the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The U.S. is the largest consumer of phosphate esters, and it recorded consumption of 38,359.2 MT in 2014, and is expected to reach 48,817.4 MT by 2020. The growing demand for food with the rise in growing population along with decreasing cultivable land is driving the demand for several fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides that uses phosphate esters are driving its market growth.

The key players in the North America phosphate Esters market are Chemtura Corporation (U.S.), Lanxess (Germany), Castrol (U.K.), Exxon Mobil Corp (U.S.), RHODIA (France), Solutia Inc. (U.S.), Elementis Plc (U.K.), the Dow Chemical Company (U.S.), and others.

Various market players present in the North America phosphate ester market adopted strategies such as new product developments, expansions, mergers & acquisitions, and supply contracts to enhance their share and market positioning.
