N-butanol is a primary alcohol with a four carbon structure. Its isomers include isobutanol, 2-butanol, and tert-butanol. N-butanol occurs naturally as minor product of fermentation of sugars and carbohydrates. It is widely used in various food & beverages, as an artificial flavoring agent, consumer products. The largest use of n- butanol is in industrial intermediate, specifically for the manufacture of butyl acetate, butyl acrylate, dibutyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate and other butyl easters and ethers. Other industrial uses include the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, polymers, pyroxylin plastics herbicide easters and printing.

The North American N-Butanol market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of more than 5 % from 2014 to 2019. The rising demand for butyl acrylate and glycol ether, the increasing awareness of bio-fuels and low prices of shale gas are among the key factors driving the market growth.

On the other hand, the changing trend in the consumption pattern of the n-butanol due to the regulatory restrictions and the saturated North American market are likely to restrain market growth in the coming years.

U.S. dominates the North American market for n-butanol having accounted for around 87 % market share in 2014, followed by Canada. The Mexico is expected to become a major market for n-butanol in the coming years witnessing the highest CAGR of more than 7 %, in terms of value, for the forecast period.

An in-depth market share analysis, in terms of revenue, of the top companies is also included in the report. These numbers are arrived at based on key facts, annual financial information from SEC filings, annual reports, and interviews with industry experts, key opinion leaders such as CEOs, directors, and marketing executives. A detailed market share analysis of the major players in the North American N-Butanol market has been covered in this report. The major companies in this market include The Dow Chemicals (U.S.), BASF SE (Germany), Eastman Chemical Company (U.S.), OXEA Ltd, Sasol Ltd and Others.

N-Butanol (normal butanol) is a clear, colorless liquid that is flammable. It has a characteristic banana-like odor and is used to produce other chemicals. N-Butanol demonstrates an overall low order of toxicity. Over exposures may cause irritation to the eyes and skin or can be harmful if inhaled. N-Butanol is practically non-toxic to aquatic organisms and birds on an acute basis. The material is readily biodegradable.

The applications which use n-butanol includes Chemical intermediate or raw material – for producing many other chemicals and plastics, including safety glass, hydraulic fluids and detergent formulations; Coatings – as a solvent for a variety of applications; Solvents – for paints, coatings, varnishes, resins, gums, dyes etc; Plasticizers – to improve how a plastic material processes; Textiles – as a swelling agent and manufacturing garments from coated fabric; Flotation agents; Floor polishes; Cosmetics; Drugs and antibiotics, hormones, and vitamins; and Gasoline & brake fluid.

The North American N-Butanol market, in terms of value, is projected to reach $2,446.8 million by 2019 from $1879.6 million in 2014, at a CAGR of 5.4% from 2014 to 2019. The rising demand butyl acrylate and glycol ether; the growing awareness of bio-fuels and its advantages; and high price of shale gas in the North American region are some of the key factors driving the market growth.

On the other hand, the high regulatory restriction on the use of n-butanol due to its harmful impact on humans and the attainment of North American N-Butanol market towards maturity phase are expected to restrain the market growth in the coming years.

Based on applications, the N-Butanol market has been segmented into Butyl acrylate, Butyl acetate, Glycol ether, direct solvents, Plasticizers, and Others. The Butyl acrylate segment held the largest market share of around 46 %, by volume in 2014 and expected to reach near by 45 % in the end of the year 2019. The direct solvent segment is projected to grow at a faster CAGR of more than 8 % during the forecast period, 2014 to 2019.

Based on countries, the North American n-butanol market is segmented into U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The U.S. held the largest market share of around 86%, by volume in 2014 and expected to reach near by 85% in the end of the year 2019. The Mexico is projected to grow at a faster CAGR of more than 7 % during the forecast period, 2014 to 2019, and held the market share of almost 6 % in the year 2014.

The key players in the North America N-Butanol market include The Dow Chemicals Company (U.S.), BASF SE (Germany), Eastman Chemical Company (U.S.), OXEA Corporation (S.A.), and Sasol Ltd.
