N-butanol is a primary alcohol with a four carbon structure. Its isomers include isobutanol, 2-butanol, and tert-butanol. N-butanol occurs naturally as a product of fermentation of sugars and carbohydrates. It is widely used in various food & beverages, as an artificial flavoring agent, consumer products. The largest use of n-butanol is in industrial intermediate, specifically for the manufacture of butyl acetate, butyl acrylate, dibutyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate and other butyl easters and ethers. Other industrial uses include the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, polymers, pyroxylin plastics herbicide easters and printing.

Factors, such as negative impact of phthalate plasticizers and saturated European market are likely to restrain market growth in the coming years.

The market in Germany dominates the European market for n-butanol having accounted nearly
55% market share in 2014, followed by France. The market in Belgium is expected to become a major market for n-butanol in the coming years witnessing the highest CAGR of more than 6%, in terms of value, during the forecast period.

An in-depth market share analysis, in terms of revenue, of the top companies is also included in the report. The market figures are arrived at based on key facts, annual financial information from SEC filings, annual reports, varying demand, and interviews with industry experts, key opinion leaders such as CEOs, directors, and marketing executives. A detailed market share analysis of the major players in the European N-Butanol market has also been covered in this report.

The major companies in this region include BASF SE (Germany), OXEA Ltd, Oxochimie, Perstop Oxo AB, and Grupa Azoty.

N-Butanol (normal butanol) is a clear, colorless liquid that is flammable. It has a characteristic banana-like odor and is used to produce other chemicals. N-Butanol demonstrates an overall low order of toxicity. Over exposures may cause irritation to the eyes and skin or can be harmful if inhaled. N-Butanol is practically non-toxic to aquatic organisms and birds on an acute basis. The material is biodegradable.

The applications which use n-butanol includes Chemical intermediate or raw material – for producing many other chemicals and plastics, including safety glass, hydraulic fluids and detergent formulations; Coatings – as a solvent for a variety of applications; Solvents – for paints, coatings, varnishes, resins, gums, dyes etc; Plasticizers – to improve how a plastic material processes; Textiles – as a swelling agent and manufacturing garments from coated fabric; Flotation agents; Floor polishes; Cosmetics; Drugs and antibiotics, hormones, and vitamins; and Gasoline & brake fluid.

The rising demand of butyl acrylate and glycol ether; the growing awareness of bio-fuels and its advantages; and high price of shale gas in the European region are some of the key factors driving the market growth.

Stringent regulations on the use of n-butanol due to its harmful impact on humans are expected to restrain the market growth in the coming years.

Based on applications, the N-Butanol market has been segmented into butyl acrylate, butyl acetate, glycol ether, direct solvents, plasticizers, and others. The Butyl acrylate segment held the largest market share of around 41 % in 2014, and is expected to account 40% by 2019. The glycol ether segment is projected to grow at a fastest CAGR of more than 8% from 2014 to 2019.

Based on country, the European n-butanol market covers Germany, France, and Belgium. The market in Germany accounted the largest market share of around 57%, by volume in 2014, and expected to account 56% by 2019. The market in Belgium is projected to grow at a fastest CAGR of more than 6% from 2014 to 2019.  The market accounted a share of around 5% in 2014.

The key players in the North America N-Butanol market include The Dow Chemicals Company (U.S.), BASF SE (Germany), Eastman Chemical Company (U.S.), OXEA Corporation (S.A.), and Sasol Ltd.
