Triethanolamine(TEA) is a strong base which is very viscous. It is a member of ethanolamines family, is completely soluble in water and has ammonia-like odor. It is colorless or yellow in color. It is a tertiary amine as well as a triol. It is manufactured by a reaction between ammonia and ethylene oxide.
It is used in industrial and consumer products as a surfactant and an emulsifier. As it is a base, it neutralizes fatty acids. It is used in a variety of ear drops for curing ear infections and for treating impacted earwax. In cleansing creams, eye gels, shampoos and other cosmetic products, it is used as a pH balancer. Cleansing creams have use of it to remove make-up. In laboratories, it is used as a complexing agent for aluminium ions which are based in aqueous solutions. It is used for the processing in photography in the silver halide process and is useful as an alkali for novice photographers. As a complexing agent, it has application in electroless plating.
