IR radiations are electromagnetic (EM) waves, where wavelengths are larger than those of visible lights, and shorter than radio waves. This section segments the IR detector market as per varied spectrum ranges that are successfully commercialized and used for applications, such as motion detection, temperature measurement, and fire & gas detection application.

SWIR or short wave infrared detectors have wavelengths of 1μm – 4 μm. These detectors are meant to deliver better performance in comparison to others. Water absorption increases significantly at 1,500nm. Spectral range from 1,500 - 1,580 is the key range popular for long distance communications. InGaAs and MCT technology is mainly used for the manufacture of Short Wave IR detectors. Short Wave IR image is similar to visible light, and the photons are reflected or absorbed by an object, providing strong contrast needed for high-resolution imaging. Ambient star light and background radiance (nightglow) are natural emitters of SWIR, and they provide excellent illumination for outdoor and night-time detection. Key manufacturers of Short Wave IR detectors are Hamamatsu (Japan) and Vigo (Poland).

The market size for IR detectors from SWIR spectral range is estimated to be nearly $21 million in 2013, and is projected to reach $40 million by 2020, at a CAGR of 8% from 2014 to 2020. The short wave infrared detector market is mainly dominated by InGaAs as majority of the manufacturers prefer this technology due to its enhanced performance rate.

The SWIR market is majorly dominated by temperature measurement, in addition to InGaAs and fire detection applications. These applications have contributed to nearly 61% of the overall market in 2013. The highest growth rate is expected from the temperature measurement application, which is around $10 million in 2014, and is anticipated to reach $17 million by 2020, at a CAGR of 8.7%.

The Asia-Pacific region has dominated the IR detector market from Short Wave IR spectral range as majority of the manufacturers are located in Japan and China. The Americas and Europe also have contributed to the rapid progression of this market. The Asia-Pacific SWIR market is estimated to be $8 million in 2013, and is projected to reach $15 million by 2020, at a CAGR of 9.3%.
