Fly ash is an extremely fine powder consisting of spherical particles, less than 50 micron in size. Fly ash is produced when coal is combusted to produce electricity. When fly ash is used in the concrete mixtures, it provides various chemical properties. Fly ash particles are far smaller than cement, and they are spherical in shape. They are used to fill the voids between cement particles in the concrete mixtures, thereby resulting in less water usage so that concrete is in workable state. The lower water content increases the concrete density which in turn improves the concrete durability. The lower water content also contributes to other factors, such as less shrinkage, cracking and so on. Fly ash in concrete acts as a synthetic pozzolan and in the presence of calcium hydroxide and water forms calcium silicate hydrate, which provides fly ash based concrete to develop the strength over time.
