Clearcoat is a variant of coatings mainly used in the finishing of automobiles. Clearcoat is the final layer applied on a vehicle, after the application of primer and basecoat. Thus, the appearance of any vehicle is determined by the clearcoat applied. These coats can either be solvent-borne or water-borne. Clearcoats are primarily differentiated into two main types, such as the 1K coating and 2K coating. The 1K coating is a formulation that is not dependent on any hardener, catalyst, or activator. 2K coating, the second type, is the one that is formulated using a hardener, catalyst, or activator.
On the basis of processing, clearcoats are divided into one/single-stage coating and two-stage coating. Single-stage coating is similar to 1K coat type as it may not always require a catalyst, hardener, or activator. This coating type is devoid of a clear top coat, thus named as one/single-stage coat. However, a top coat is laid to obtain enhanced levels of durability and/or depth. Two-stage coating needs both the base and clear coat, with or without the usage of a catalyst, hardener, or activator.
Clearcoat gives a lustrous appearance to the vehicle, and acts as a safety layer for the inner layers of the vehicle to prevent it from fading. However, clearcoat itself is prone to scratches and damage caused due to exposure to pollution and UV rays. This coat needs regular waxing to maintain the luster.
