The Europe butadiene market, along with its end products, has witnessed a linear growth in recent years and this growth is estimated to increase in coming years. Butadiene is obtained as a by-product from ethylene and propylene manufacturing by selective distillation of cracked naphtha or gas oil stream. It is a colorless, flammable gas; soluble in ether and alcohol but insoluble in water. It can be polymerized very easily in presence of oxygen. Butadiene is one of the basic chemical for the chemical industry and a key raw material for automobile tires, engineering polymers, latex products, textile industry, and paint industry.

The butadiene market growth is mainly driven by increasing demand in Germany, France, Italy, and Russia. This increasing demand is expected from the application segments including SBR, and PBR, which are used as a raw material in tire industry, which has witnessed considerable growth in recent years, and is expected to witness a similar growth in future as well. Considerable amount of investments are made by various market players to serve the end-user applications industry in future. Europe is the third-largest butadiene market that accounted for around 22% share of the total global demand in 2014. The region is further expected to witness high growth in future mainly due to the high growth potential of the automotive market in Germany and increasing focus towards bio-based butadiene.

PBR is the largest application segment of butadiene in Europe. Almost 26% of the total butadiene demand was from the PBR application in 2014. SBR is the second-largest application segment in Europe, followed by SB Latex.

The key drivers of butadiene market in Europe include rapid growth of automotive industry, which is the largest consumer of poly butadiene rubber; increasing demand for the electronics and household appliances, which extensively consumes acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), and the increasing demand for bio-based butadiene.

This study estimates the European market for butadiene between 2014 and 2019. This study provides a detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis of the market. Various secondary sources, such as encyclopedia, directories, industry journals, and databases were referred to identify and collect information useful for this extensive, commercial study of the butadiene market. The primary sources – experts from related industries and suppliers – were interviewed to obtain and verify critical information as well as to assess the future of butadiene market.

Butadiene is obtained as a by-product from ethylene and propylene. It is a colorless gas used to produce SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber), PBR (Polybutadiene Rubber), ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), SB Latex (Styrene Butadiene Latex), and NR (Nitrile Rubber), which are used in automotive industry, paint industry, paper coating industry, textile industry, electronics appliances, and so on.

Germany is the largest butadiene market in Europe and it is expected to remain the same in future as well. The increasing industrialization including expansions and joint ventures by leading companies in Germany are driving the demand for butadiene.

The Europe butadiene market valued $4,358.6 million in 2014, and is expected to reach $5,412.9 by the end of 2019, with a CAGR of 4.4%. Rapid growth of the tire industry and the trend of bio-based butadiene in the region are driving the growth of butadiene market in Europe.

Based on applications, the butadiene market is divided into SBR, PBR, ABS, SB Latex, and NR. PBR application was the largest consumer of butadiene in 2014 with 26% of market share. Around 70% of PBR is used as a raw material by the tire industry. The rapid growth of automotive industry in Europe drives the demand for PBR. SBR segment holds the second-largest market share of the European butadiene market.

The leading butadiene manufacturers in the region are Versalis (Italy), INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe (Switzerland), LyondellBasell (U.S.), Repsol (Spain), and JSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim Inc. (Russia).
