Steam is a common medium for maintaining the temperature of a primary process fluid line. Steam tracing systems are the process through which steam is provided to the process lines to maintain the heat of the products. When a product in a pipeline is at a higher temperature than the air surrounding it, heat will pass through the wall of the pipeline from the product to the surrounding air. This heat loss will cause the temperature of the product to fall. Insulating the pipeline will significantly lower the rate at which heat is lost, but unfortunately, no insulation is 100% efficient. Steam is a very efficient carrier of heat  and it can transport heat over long distances and gives up its heat at a constant temperature. To make up the heat lost from the product pipeline, small bore steam pipes, or tracers, are attached to the product line. Heat from the steam passes into the product line and replaces the heat lost. When flowing through a tube, the steam will dissipate its latent heat to the process pipe to compensate for the loss in heat. During this process the steam temperature remains constant. However when all steam condenses, the tube will then be filled with condensate which has a significantly lower heat capacity and a worse heat transfer coefficient. This process occurs gradually and along the entire length of the heating tube. Therefore it is necessary to install a steam trap at the end of the heating circuit to "trap the steam" and discharge the condensate with a minimum loss of fresh steam.

The steam tracing market is expected to grow in Asia Pacific and middle-East & Africa due to growing industrialization in these regions. There is an growing concern over energy wastage while processing the products which will eventually lead to the usage of steam tracing systems in every process industry. The growing chemical and petrochemical industry around the globe, and growing oil & gas explorations will help to drive the market of steam tracing systems around the globe.
