An inductor is a passive electronic component that stores energy as a magnetic field. In its least difficult structure, an inductor consists of a wire circle or coil. The inductance is directly dependent on the number of turns in the coil. Inductance also relies on the span of the coil and on the sort of material around which the loop is wound. They are widely used across various industrial sectors such as automotive industry, power industry, industrial sector, RF & telecommunication, military & defense, and consumer electronics.

This market is expected to grow from USD 2,780 million in 2014, to reach USD 3,750 million by 2019, at a CAGR of 6.2% from 2014 to 2019.

Consumer electronics, automotive, industrial manufacturing, and military & defense are some of the application segments which have been covered in this report. The consumer electronics sector held the highest share globally during the forecast period, due to various innovative technical developments in the sector.

Asia-Pacific (APAC) is expected to grow at the highest CAGR of 7.6% during the forecast period, followed by North America, Europe, and Latin America. APAC holds the highest share in the global market and is expected to achieve sustainable growth in the long run due to the increasing consumption of electronic goods. China, Japan, the U.S, and Taiwan are some of the key countries for the inductor market globally, due to the presence of manufacturing industry.

An inductor is used to store energy in the form of a magnetic field and is defined as a passive electronic component. Inductor comprises of loops of protected copper wire around some kind of center at its middle, which may be a metal or air. The inductance of an inductor is dependent on the number of turn of copper wire on the center material and also the center material and the radius of the coil.

Inductors are one of the four fundamental types of passive electronic components, the other three being the resistor, the capacitor, and the memristor. The inductor is classified based on its core type such as air core, ferromagnetic/ferrite core, laminated core, ceramic core, and toroidal core. It is also categorized based on the type of application such as fixed inductor choke coil, variable inductor, coupled inductor; multilayer inductor, power inductor, and surface mount inductor.

The global Electronic market is growing exponentially because of increasing demand and is expected to grow further. The new features and technology help improve the quality of the device which in turn drives the electronic market.  Inductor is a basic component in an electronic circuit used in the device such as TV, smartphone, and electronic break among others, due to its various features such as small size, low DC resistance, and the capability to withstand large currents, which improves product performance, thereby continually driving the related demand. The excessive use of inductor in the manufacturing of the devices indicates that the inductor market would grow with the increasing demand from the automotive, electronics, and telecom sector.  According to applications, different types of inductors are available in the market.

Research in the field of inductors has resulted in the reduction of the size of inductor for various applications along with increased current rating, places a lot of pressure on the electronics in the power management circuit. Designers are tasked with designing their circuits to handle the same or more power, but with smaller components. One of those key components in the power management circuit is the inductor. The inductor is part of the switch mode power supply (SMPS) circuit that is used to store and release energy.

Inductors are used with capacitors in various wireless communications applications. An inductor connected in a series or parallel with a capacitor can provide discrimination against unwanted signals. Large inductors are used in the power supplies of electronic equipment of all types, including computers and their peripherals.

In terms of geography, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region leads in terms of generating revenue, accounting for the largest share of the market in 2014. APAC dominates the global inductor market due to the presence of a large number of chip inductor manufacturers in the region. A majority of the demand in the region comes from countries such as China, India, Taiwan, and South Korea, due to the robust growth in office automation, automotive, communication, and consumer electronics sectors. Moreover, these countries offer numerous benefits in terms of material and labour cost considerations.
