A fiber laser is a special type of solid state laser which consists of an un-doped cladding and a doped core of higher refraction (active medium). The laser light passes through the fiber as it is guided within the fiber core. It experiences a very high amplification due to its great length of interaction.

 

Fiber lasers are simple, compact, as well as maintenance free and have a robust design. They have a large surface area which is an active medium for simple thermal management by air or industrial water cooling. They provide a good quality beam and also have high electrical and optical efficiency. They are also characterised by high peak energy in pulsed mode. Fiber lasers exhibit highly stable vibrations, extended lifetime, and maintenance-free operation. High peak power and nanosecond pulses enable effective marking and engraving. The additional power and better beam quality provide cleanly cut edges and higher cutting speeds.

 

Fiber lasers are now being used to produce high-performance Surface-Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices. These lasers raise the throughput and reduce the cost of ownership in comparison to older solid-state laser technology. Fiber lasers are used in various applications, such as material processing, which involve marking, engraving, cutting and other operations, telecommunications, spectroscopy, medicine, and directed energy weapons.
