Electronic projection display technology originated from the oil film projector system in early 1940’s. Due to various limitations, solid state technologies such as CRT-LCD light valves and active-matrix-LCD panels have challenged the oil firm projectors. In response to various limitations of the LCD technologies and to provide superior image quality, high brightness projection display systems have been developed based on digital light processing (DLP) technology. DLP is based on the digital micro mirror device (DMMD), a micro electro mechanical (MEM) based system. DLP technology was invented in 1987 by Larry Hornbeck at Texas Instruments, Inc. The DMMD is a fast, reflective digital light switch that controls a light source using a binary pulse width modulation technique. It can further be combined with components which include image processing, memory, a light source, and optics to form a DLP system. The DLP system is capable of projecting large, bright, high contrast color images with better color fidelity, and consistency than current display technologies.
