In addition, the use of cellulosic materials to produce ethanol will also help in achieving other environmental benefits compared to corn-based ethanol

 

Cellulosic Ethanol is developing as subindustry within the overall biofuels market. Ethanol manufactured from cellulosic feedstock is on course to be cost competitive with the conventional corn-based ethanol. In United States three new, commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plants are likely to resume operations. In Italy and Brazil two other advanced biofuels facilities that have already commenced operations, while many other plants others are in the pipeline. Custom harvesters and corn growers are working with biorefineries over the past few years to harvest corn stover for the production of cellulosic ethanol.

 

In terms of cost earlier cellulosic ethanol could not compete with corn ethanol or gasoline. A cellulosic ethanol plant is estimated to require roughly six times the capital cost or capex compared to similarly sized corn ethanol plant. Although higher investment and manufacturing costs did earlier present a considerable hurdle for commercialization.  As the technology matures, future plants are expected to have lower capital costs. The current R&D initiatives aim to make cellulosic ethanol cost competitive with gasoline & corn ethanol. Hence the success of cellulosic ethanol will also depend upon achieving economies of scale. Recently a Brazilian company Raizen procured its first export order for cellulosic ethanol from Europe. Its cellulosic ethanol commanded a 26% premium over conventional ethanol prices.
