The U.S. accounted for a share of 79.0% of the biocides market in North America, in terms of volume, in 2015. A number of important producers of biocides are based in the U.S., such as The Dow Chemical Company, Troy Group, Lubrizol Corporation, and so on. These companies have a number of domestic and international consumers of their products. In the municipal water treatment applications, consumers are expected to be more price sensitive and may not demand too much specialty biocides. They will consume more commodity biocides.

The biocides market in Mexico is the fastest-growing in North America, and this trend is expected to continue in the near future as well. The middle class population is demanding better quality cosmetic products. This has increased the demand of biocides in the personal care segment. Overall, large government infrastructure projects as well as the H1N1 influenza outbreak have increased the demand for biocides in the country.

The Canadian biocides market is the second-largest in North America. Wood preservation is an important application in Canada. Its strong timber industry is affected by the brown-rot fungi, which is a major microbe causing biodeterioration.

Water treatment is projected to be the largest and the third fastest-growing application segment in the North America biocides market between 2016 and 2021, in terms of value. This application is dominated by the chlorine-based biocides. Chlorine dioxide (CIO2) is used for oxidative and petrochemical applications, and for water deodorization and disinfection. Biocides used in water treatment inhibit the growth of algae, bacteria, yeasts, and fungi in water used for industrial applications. Food & beverage is the second-largest application segment. Biocides perform a dual function of preventing the spoilage of food and prevention of food-borne illness. They are applied on the surfaces, in food and water containers and equipment. Wood preservation is the third-largest application segment in the North America biocides market. Wood preservation biocides are used in residential construction and other outdoor applications. In above-ground and ground contact applications, various biocides are used to control fungal growth.

Among types, the halogen compounds segment is the largest, in terms of volume. Fluorine and chlorine are more electronegative and aggressive halogenating agents. Bromine is a weaker halogenating agent than both fluorine and chlorine. The organic acids market, the second-largest type-segment in terms of volume, is growing on account of their increasing consumption in food preservation due to their ability to control bacteria.
