The Vietnam Feed Market is projected to reach a value of USD 9.52 billion by 2021, at a CAGR of 5.6% from 2016 to 2021. The growth is driven by factors such as gradual shift from unorganized livestock farming to organized sector and the growing awareness regarding the importance of health and hygiene of livestock. The support provided by the government to foreign companies has also led to the development and growth of this market.

On the basis of the ingredients used for the manufacture of feed, the Vietnamese feed market is led by animal-based ingredients, followed by plant-based. Fishmeal is extensively used for animal-based feed in Vietnam as it provides quality protein. It also enriches animal diets with calcium and phosphorus. The development of aquaculture in Vietnam is supporting an increase in demand for fishmeal. The growth is driven by growing customer attention toward increasing the value of livestock by providing them quality feed which compensates for nutrients and supplements that are missing from their natural diet.

Among the types of livestock–swine, poultry, ruminants, aquatic animals, and other livestock types–the swine segment accounted for the largest market share followed by poultry in 2015. High growth of this segment is attributable to the fact that pork has the highest consumption share amongst the animal meat consumed by the Vietnamese.

High feed prices is one of the restraints in the feed market of Vietnam. The shortage of raw materials for the manufacture of feed is further hindering the growth of this market.

Masan Group (Vietnam) is one of the prominent players in the Vietnamese feed market. The company’s core competencies are advanced manufacturing and quality-control systems, regulatory expertise, market knowledge, strong distribution network and R&D capabilities. In 2015, Masan Group acquired 99.9% share of Sam Kim Co. Ltd. (Vietnam) and renamed the company as Masan Nutri-Science Company. With this acquisition Masan acquired 52% shares in Vietnam French Cattle Feed JSC (Proconco) and 70% stakes in Agro Nutrition Company (Anco). The acquisition enabled Masan Group to increase its presence significantly in the Vietnamese feed market.
