The South American reclosers market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% during the forecast period of 2014 to 2019. Automatic restoration of power, more reliability in distribution systems, decreased customer outage costs, automated data collection, and need for state-of-the-art technology are among the key factors that are fueling the growth of the reclosers market. However, high costs associated with the installation of reclosers and the lack of governments in investments for grid stability may hamper the growth of the South American market in the coming years. The fastest-growing segment in Argentina has become attractive for companies engaged in the development and marketing of reclosers, while the Brazilian segment is expected to dominate the South American market during the given forecast period.

In 2014, Cooper Industries held the leading position in the South American reclosers market. Over the past three years, the company adopted expansion of its R&D capabilities, new product launches, and strategic partnerships/agreements as its key business strategies to sustain its dominant position in this market. In addition, ABB Ltd., S&C Electric Company, G&W, and Schneider-Electric are other key players in the South American reclosers market.

A recloser has the ability to detect phase and phase‐to‐ground overcurrent conditions; to interrupt the circuit if the overcurrent continues after a predetermined time; and then to automatically reclose the line. If the fault that initiated the operation still exists, then the recloser will stay open after a preset number of operations, thus detaching the faulted section from the rest of the system. In an overhead distribution system, 70 to 90 per cent of the faults are of temporary nature and they last, at the most, for a few cycles or seconds.

The South American reclosers market has been segmented on the basis of phase, control, and country. On the basis of phase, the market has been segmented into single phase, three phase, and triple-single reclosers. In terms of controls, the market has been segmented into electric and hydraulic. The market has been further segmented, on the basis of geography, into Brazil, and Argentina, among others.

Brazil is the largest contributor to the South American reclosers market. The South American region accounted for 14.5% of the global reclosers market in 2013. Brazil has a large geographical area and the demand for electricity is high; this demands for more stable grid and robust distribution networks, which is driving the growth of the reclosers market in this country and in turn the South American market.

Hydraulic recloser control is used mostly in three-phase and some single-phase reclosers. The hydraulic recloser segment is expected to hold a smaller share in the South American market, as compared to the electric recloser segment, during the forecast period, as it is difficult to configure hydraulic reclosers and their maintenance costs are relatively high. The three phase reclosers segment is expected to continue its dominance over the other segments by gaining approximately 94% of the South American market by 2019. In the controls category of the reclosers market, the electric control segment is expected to dominate the South American market, as hydraulic reclosers are gradually being replaced by the former.

In 2013, the South American reclosers market is dominated by ABB Ltd. (Switzerland), Cooper Industries (Ireland), G&W Electric (U.S.). ABB Ltd. is the leader in the South America reclosers market. The company operates as a power and automation technology company and provides solutions for energy-efficient generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity.

Factors such as automatic restoration of power, reliability, customer outage cost reduction, automation/data collection ability of reclosers, growth of power distribution networks, and customers’ motivation to install reclosers and advanced systems are expected to drive the reclosers market in South America, in the coming years. However, the capital costs of automated reclosers are expected to be a possible barrier to the growth of the reclosers market in South America.
