The polystyrene market in South America & MEA, along with its end products, has witnessed growth in the past few years, and this growth is projected to increase in the coming years. Polystyrene is one of the basic polymeric raw materials widely used in packaging, electronics, appliances, plastics & rubber industries. General purpose polystyrene is clear, hard, and rather brittle. It is an inexpensive resin per unit weight. The scale of its production is several billion kilograms per year. Environmental regulations, future safety norms, and innovative techniques for its use will be the key influencing factors for the South America & MEA polystyrene market in the near future.

The polystyrene market is experiencing high growth which is expected to continue in the near future, mainly driven by the highly growing markets of South American & MEA and Asia-Pacific regions. Considerable amount of investments are made by various market players to serve the end-user applications industry in the future. The Asia-Pacific region is the main polystyrene market that accounted for about approximately 42% market share of the total global demand in 2013, whereas South America & MEA accounted for 18% approximately. The region is further expected to show a high growth in the future, mainly due to the high growth potential of the plastic & rubber industry in China, India, and other regions of Asia-Pacific.

Almost 39% of the total polystyrene demand was for the packaging application in 2013, with the electronics industry being the fastest-growing end-use segments, primarily due to high penetration in all the regions.

The drivers of the industry include increased industrialization in the emerging markets, high plastic consumption, unavailability of alternate sources, and the increasing penetration with emerging application.

This study basically aims to estimate the polystyrene market in South America & MEA for 2012 and to project its demand by 2018. This research study provides a detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis of the South America & MEA polystyrene market. Polystyrene is a synthetic aromatic polymer made of monomer styrene. Polystyrene can be solid or foamed. General purpose polystyrene is clear, hard, and rather brittle. It is an inexpensive resin per unit weight. Polystyrene is one of the most widely used plastics, the scale of its production being several billion kilograms per year. It is used in industries such as packaging, electronics, appliances, construction, and others.

Polystyrene is very slow to biodegrade and is therefore a focus of controversy. It is often abundant as a form of litter in the outdoor environment, particularly along shores and waterways, especially in its foam form.

The South American market, in terms of value, is projected to reach $4593 million by 2018 from $3434 million in 2012, at a CAGR of ~5% from 2012 to 2018. The rising demand for plastics and related products and non-availability of alternate products are some of the key factors driving the market. On the other hand, environmental concerns and preference to organic products are some of the restraining factors for the polystyrene market in the coming years.

Based on region, the polystyrene market has been segmented into Brazil, Saudi Arabia & Argentina. Brazil’s market share in this segment was $772 million in 2012 which is predicted to increase to $ 1056 million with a CAGR of about 6% during the forecast period. Next to Brazil is Saudi Arabia which is expected to grow at a CAGR of nearly 5% and is forecast to reach $363 million by 2018.

Based on application, the polystyrene market is segmented into packaging, electronics, appliances, construction & others. Among these, packaging accounted for the highest share of 39%, followed by electronics with approximately 15% of share.  In the coming years, the packaging sector is forecast to witness a growth of nearly 5% from 2012 to 2018. This high surge in packaging is due to the increase in demand for logistical & distribution verticals in industries.

The key players in the South American & MEA market include BASF SE (Germany), Total (Paris), Videolar SA (Sao Paulo), Unigel Quimica S.A De. C.V (Brazil), and SABIC (Riyadh).
