Advanced phase change materials possess the ability to store and release latent heat during the phase transition. The thermal conductivity of a phase change material (PCM) is usually small, inorganic PCMs often show sub cooling, and compatibility with the container material is not always given. Therefore, different strategies have been developed to cope with these problems. Drawbacks of inorganic PCMS include phase segregation and super cooling, which affect its latent heat properties. The inorganic advanced phase change materials are further classified into salt hydrates and metallic. Metallic PCM that includes low melting metals and metal eutectics are not yet commercialized because of weight penalties; however, the salt hydrates have been commercialized. The salt hydrates consist of an alloy of inorganic advanced salts and water, which combine in a crystalline matrix when the material solidifies. The salt hydrates pose a number of advantages, such as low chemical cost, higher enthalpies, better thermal conductivity, and suitable melting temperature.

Inorganic advanced phase change material is the major type of advanced phase change materials in terms of value and volume. The global market size for inorganic advanced phase change materials has been estimated at 79.9 KT in 2014, and is projected to reach 214.5 KT by 2019 at a CAGR of 21.8% from 2014 to 2019. This growth is taking place on account of the fact that inorganic advanced phase change materials have a higher melting enthalpy and sharper melting points than organic and eutectic PCMs. Building & Construction, HVAC and shipping, packaging & transportation are some of the major applications of inorganic advanced phase change materials.

The Americas Inorganic Advanced PCMs Market was valued at $68.1 million in 2014 and is projected to reach $186.2 million by 2019, at a CAGR of 22.3% between 2014 and 2019. The growth of the inorganic advanced phase change materials market is primarily triggered by the increasing demand for inorganic advanced PCMs in the thermal energy storage and building & construction industries. According to the U.S. Energy Information Agency, buildings consume more than 70.0% of the total power generated nationwide; and that heating, cooling, lighting, and ventilation account for about 60.0% of any building’s total energy consumption.

Brazil is projected to grow at the highest rate in the next five years, at a CAGR of 22.5% in terms of volume. The growth of the inorganic advanced phase change materials market in Asia-Pacific is taking place on account of the increasing consumption in the shipping, packaging & transportation and HVAC sector. The U.S. is the dominant region with a value of $25.1 million in the 2014.

The Americas inorganic advanced phase change materials market has a high degree of competition among its players. Different players in the market are catering to the industries, such as building & construction, HVAC, shipping, packaging & transportation, textile, fixed refrigeration, thermal energy storage, electronics, and others. The key players in this market are Sonoco, Outlast Technology, DuPont, BASF SE, Rubitherm, RGEES, Cryopak, and among others.
