Low density polyethylene(LDPE) is a chemical resistant material. In the form of a closed-cell foam, it is not totally solid and flexible but semi-rigid. However, there are two types of LDPE materials, cross-linked low-density polyethylene foam and extruded low-density polyethylene foam.
Cross-linked LDPE foam is created by batches. The cross-linking agent is put on temperature due to which it blends with solid polyethylene. Then more temperature is applied so that there is cross linking between the agent and the polyethylene.Even more temperature causes foaming. Extruded LDPE foam is manufactured by a continuous process. Polyethylene is melted and added to halogenated hydrocarbon, which acts as a foaming agent. Pressure is applied and then the mix is fed into a screw extruder. The resultant material is a polyethylene with foaming agent across the material.
This material has many properties like resistance to chemicals and water, buoyancy, energy-absorbing and cushioning properties. The compressive strength depends on the density of the foam, with denser ones having more compressive strength. Electric materials also use this material due to its properties of dielectric strength. Due to its high water-resistance property, it can be used in many applications which have the presence of water which can spoil materials.
The packing industry also uses this material as it can absorb energy as well as provide cushioning. The chemical-resistance of the material can be used to reduce the speed of degradation.
