In February 2013, TPC Group had announced its plan to venture into the next phase of engineering to produce on-demand butadiene and expand its butadiene production capacity in the U.S. to meet the rising market demand and customer needs. The new plant is expected to begin function by 2016. This will help the company to strengthen its presence in the North American butadiene market.

The major participants operating in the North American butadiene market are TPC Group (U.S.), ExxonMobil (U.S.), LyondellBasell (U.S.), Shell Chemicals (Netherlands), and BASF SE (Germany). TPC Group Inc. is one of the largest producers of butadiene and other major chemical products in North America. The company operates principally through two segments, namely C4 Processing and Performance Products. It conducts its butadiene business through its C4 Processing segment. The company holds the largest market share in the North American butadiene market, owing to factors such as expansion activities to increase the butadiene production capacity through agreements and new establishments.
