BASF and Sinopec, through their joint venture BASF-YPC Company Limited (China), expanded their ethylene oxide production at the Nanjing plant, China. Ethylene oxide is a basic chemical used as a raw material for the production of ethanolamine. This initiative by the two companies will help cater to the demand from the Asia-Pacific region.

In addition to this, BASF SE expanded the ethylene oxide derivatives value chain to include a new non-ionic surfactants plant and a new amines complex for the production of ethanolamines, ethylene amines, and dimethyl. BASF SE is principally focused on developing its ethanol amines business across the world. As part of its growth strategy, the company decided to consolidate its ethanol amines capacity in North America to strengthen its business in the region.

In March 2013, Akzo Nobel built a multipurpose reactor to expand the local production capacity of amines. The investment made was around $90 million in its surface chemistry manufacturing site in China. This will boost the company’s capacity and improve its operations in the Asia-Pacific region. As a part of its business strategy, Akzo Nobel concentrates on concept of total integration in order to optimize its value chains. It has uniquely aligned its businesses internally and with customers & suppliers. It also adopted the strategy of forward integration which would allow it to have an edge in the market even when the margins are decreasing.
