Asia-Pacific Image Sensor Market by Technology (CMOS, CCD and Contact Image Sensor) and by Application (Medical, Automotive, Defense & Aerospace, Consumer, Surveillance, Industrial and Others) and by Country - Analysis and Forecast to 2019

An image sensor is a device used to convert optical image presented by lens into an electrical signal, which is mostly used in digital cameras, camera modules, and other imaging devices. Currently, most digital still cameras make use of either a CCD image sensor or CMOS sensor. CCDs were favoured in cases where image quality was the most important parameter, while CMOS image sensors were used in applications such as PC cameras and camera phones because of their qualities such as low power consumption and high degree of on-chip integration. Over the last decade, the CMOS image sensor technology has made huge progress. Advancements in pixel structure, such as global shutter pixels, have already reduced the gap between speed and image quality, which had been an issue in high-speed applications.

The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has witnessed significant growth in the semiconductors and electronics sector, in recent years. Others regions have been outsourcing their labour to APAC countries in order to reduce production costs, as the labor rate is often much lower compared to the other regions.

APAC accounts for the largest share in the global image sensor market. This is mainly because most of the sensor manufacturers are located in the APAC region. Recently, Sony Corp. (Japan) announced that it is planning to offer image sensors for automotive cameras and is aiming to tap 50% of the automotive image sensor market. A number of companies are entering the market for smart cars. Google is working with Japanese automakers, including Honda Motors, to develop on-board systems, and has been conducting research on technology for self-driving vehicles on its own. Nissan Motor plans to commercialize driverless cars by 2020. The annual production of smart cars is expected to reach 100 million vehicles by 2025. (Source: Nikkei Asian Review). This would drive the demand for image sensors in the automotive segment.

The market players in the APAC image sensor market include Sony (Japan), Samsung Electronics (South Korea), Aptina Imaging Corporation (U.S.), Toshiba Corporation (Japan), and Omnivision Technologies (U.S.), among others, who have contributed significantly to the image sensor technology and its further development in the concerned region. Competition in the image sensors market for APAC region is high, with manufacturers constantly striving to outperform their rivals with respect to pixel size, pixel count, resolution, and performance.
